RF activities against Georgian aggression supported by secretaries of CSTO member-states’ security councils

The conflict in Georgia is gradually passing from the armed confrontation to the diplomatic phase. In these conditions Russian diplomacy is interested in receiving a political backing in its government activities. We would remind that previously the countries of the Shanghai cooperation organization already expressed their understanding and support of Russian activities during the Georgia-South Ossetia conflict. President of our country Alexander Lukashenko also respected the activities of Russia.

Now Russia is seeking support from the CSTO member-states and it must be pointed out that it has every reason for it. Breaking out hostilities in the South Ossetia Georgia attacked Russian peace-makers and Russian citizens that means practically military aggression against CSTO member-states.

In these conditions the Secretaries of CSTO member-states’ security councils supported Russian activities during the conflict in South Ossetia at the meeting on September, 3. In particular as the secretary of the Security Council of Russia Nikolai Patrushev pointed out, - “The Council of the secretaries of CSTO member-states’ security councils also supported the activities of Russia as earlier it did the Shanghai cooperation organization”.

It must be pointed out that already at the meeting in Yerevan Russia informed the CSTO member-states about its activities in South Ossetia during Georgian aggression. Meanwhile according to Nikolai Patrushev none of the secretaries of CSTO Security Council doubted that first who began the war was Georgia and that it made it consciously being aware of the possibilities of a great number of victims among civilian population.

Certainly the CSTO support of the Russian activities during Georgian aggression is important for Russian government but there is a much bigger problem that is the other states’ recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Meanwhile the government of Russia makes no secret that it is interested in the integration of Sukhuma and Tskhinval into the Collective Security Treaty Organization and into Commonwealth of Independent States. But to make this the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia need to be recognized by all the member-states of these organizations.
