European Weightlifting Championship-2010 in Belarus

At the congress of the European Weightlifting Federation (EWF) which took place in Italy it was decided that European Weightlifting Championship-2010 will be held in Belarus.

At the congress of the European Weightlifting Federation (EWF) which took place in Italy it was decided that European Weightlifting Championship-2010 will be held in Belarus.

The events are planned to be held at Minsk Palace of Sport but if by that time the multifunctional “Minsk-Arena” Sport Complex is ready, the tournament will take place on its arena. There is also a project to build an all-purpose gymnasium in Minsk and if it should happen that its construction is completed by 2010, the gym may receive the contest of the best European weightlifters.

It is not the first time that Belarus hosts such events: for instance, in 2004 World Weightlifting Championship among juniors took place in Minsk. The decision to hold European Championship for adults in Minsk was taken after three visits of the EWF delegation headed by Marino Ercolani Casadei, EWF Secretary General, to Minsk: during these visits the delegates met Alexander Shpilevski, Chairman of Belarusian Weightlifting Federation; Alexander Grigorov, Minister of Sport and Tourism; Gennady Alekseenko, Assistant to the President for Physical Culture Affairs; as well as the representatives of Belarusian Broadcasting Company. EWF Secretary General has acquainted himself both with athletic and technical facilities, the latter being important for broadcasting the contest.
