On January 15th at the National Library President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko held a press conference for Belarusian and foreign journalists. It was a big conference if to consider both the number of participants (more than 350 journalists were invited to take part) and its duration (about five hours). Its content was rich and diverse. The President answered more than sixty questions related to the economic and social development of Belarus, foreign policy, relations with Russia, integration processes on the post-Soviet area and Belarus’ participation in them.
Sincere and at the same time thoughtful answers of the President to different, sometimes thorny and tough, questions set a calm, but businesslike tone of the conference.
Content-richness and consistency in judgments of the Head of Belarus make it possible to deduce the main features of the forthcoming national policy. They are as follows: in politics – honesty and sincerity, in economy – modernization, in social sphere – justice and targeted support, on the international arena – active stance on promotion of integration. The core of the national development can be best defined by the words of the President said at the end of the press conference: “We shouldn’t fight with each other as we have enough confrontation with others, and we must confront them together. It is our common land, so let’s take care of it”.
The press conference has become the most remarkable and important event so far this year, and not only in Belarus, but, at least, on the post-Soviet area. To receive evidence to that, one should just consider its extensive media coverage. On January 15th only there were more than a thousand of news reports! Geography of publications also impresses: Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, France, etc.
