On June 12th Russians will celebrate the Day of Adoption of the State Sovereignty Declaration of the Russian Federation. “Together with us tens of millions of our compatriots who live abroad as well as those who sincerely love and respect Russia will celebrate this festive occasion. Surely, among them are our brothers Belarusians,” said Alexander Surikov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Belarus, during the press conference at the National Press Centre.

Under his words, adoption of the Declaration has marked a new phase in Russia’s life – “a phase of practical federalism and strong civil society”. “The transition to democracy and market economy was supported by Russians who made their final choice in favour of freedom. It was one of the most outstanding achievements in Russia in the XX century,” noted A.Surikov.

At the beginning of 1990’s 50% of Russian people were living rough because of unreasonable decisions taken by the government. Harsh political situation and economic crisis provoked by continuously rising prices were overcome only at the end of 1990’s. Assessing current situation in Russia the diplomat stressed that “one would like it to be better, but at the same time more than a little has been achieved”. Last year the Russian Federation was reckoned seventh among the countries with the highest GDP; in 2007 the number of people earning less than living wage didn’t exceed 14%; in the first quarter of 2008 average wage made up $700. Besides that, financial strength of the country is increasing: gold and foreign currency reserves made up $0.5 trillion while Stabilization Fund - $150 million. Russian stock market is rising as well, that’s why one of the foreground tasks is the establishment of the International Financial Centre of world level.

“Moreover, the authority of Russia on the international scene is growing,” added A.Surikov. “Still, the main thing is that the most of difficult reforms and reorganizations Russia has lived through together with brotherly Belarus”. He also reminded that on April 2nd 1996, the Unity Day, Belarus and Russia took their choice for integration. Having undergone many severe tests, this friendship serves as a reliable basis for further development of good neighbourly relations. “Russia and Belarus face to a large extend common problems which need coordinated efforts to be successfully solved,” said the Ambassador. On our part, we are ready for every kind of cooperation and integration advancements that will further economic and social development of our countries as well as consolidation of democratic institutions.
