Constitutional Act of the Union State Should Be Founded on Equality Principle

“Constitution of the Union State should have the same validity as the currently effective Treaty Establishing the Union State,” stated Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus, meeting students of Belarus State University. Under his words, if the new document is less efficient, there is no point in approving it.

“Constitution of the Union State should have the same validity as the currently effective Treaty Establishing the Union State,” stated Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus, meeting students of Belarus State University. Under his words, if the new document is less efficient, there is no point in approving it.

Russia holds another viewpoint of this problem: they examine certain articles of the Treaty currently in force and suggest eliminating the clauses that does not suit the Russian party. But Belarus cannot agree to this as it can weaken legal basis of the Union State.

Alexander Lukashenko said that Belarus suggested its own procedure of the Constitutional Act adoption. At the same time our country will adhere to equality principle when forming the Union State. Equality of rights is the main principle for any union. And if it is not observed, no union has prospects. “We insist on it, but Russia is not ready for it. To tell you the truth, I don’t even know when it is ready,” noted the President. At the same time he stressed that Belarus will adhere to this position.
