NPS building in Belarus will be launched in 2010. That was reported by deputy Minister of energy of Belarus Mikhail Mikhadyuk at press-conference held on March, 10, 2009.

In particular, Mikhail Mikhadyuk pointed out that the construction schedule of NPS-to-be, the first power unit of which is planned to be launched in 2016, has been discussed with “Rosatom” state corporation. “If no obstacles appear, these deadlines will be met”, - he added.

We would remind that NPS with the power of 2 thousand megawatt is planned to be built in Belarus; the first power unit is scheduled to be launched in 2016 and the second one – in 2018. The Ostrovets (Grodno oblast) construction site has been chosen as a priority one for NPS placement. The main contractor of NPS building will be Russian close corporation “Atomstroiexport”.

Deputy Minister of energy of Belarus also said that the draft intergovernmental agreement between Belarus and Russia on cooperation in the sphere of peaceful atomic energy use is being considered by the both states. The signing of this document is a very significant step before the implementation of the project on NPS building in Belarus. According to deputy minister during the current year another agreement on nuclear power station building in the republic must be signed by Belarusian and Russian sides.

In his turn the first vice president of Russian close corporation “Atomstroiexport” Alexander Glukhov confirmed that the project on the Belarusian NPS building can be implemented in time.

“The construction work must be initiated in 2010 in order to launch the first power unit in 2016”, - he said. Meanwhile he underlined that “the cooperation with Belarus will be carried out within the Union State and this fact will be taken into account at all the stages of the project implementation”. “We hope that Belarus won’t limit itself to the construction of only two power units and will build a complex of them in the nearest decade”, - summed up the vice-president of close corporation “Atomstroiexport”.

It is worth mentioning that today energy sector is the leading one in the modern world and is the basis for effective economic development of any state. Nuclear energy is of particular interest at the world market and it is explained by the increase in demands for cheaper energy resources and by the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Today there are 439 nuclear power stations in the world. They produce more than 17 % from the total volume of the consumed energy.
