Discussing the report of ECOSOC at the U.N.O. General Meeting Andrei Dapkyunas, permanent representative of Belarus at U.N.O., said that the Republic of Belarus considered it necessary to increase the significance of United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as a centre that would help the world community to coordinate the practical efforts aimed at responding to global challenges in the sphere of economy, social development and environmental protection.

Besides that, the permanent representative of Belarus at U.N.O. paid his attention to the necessity of holding an ECOSOC summit in the near future so as to discuss the means of overcoming the global financial crisis.

Andrei Dapkyunas made a special emphasis on the fact that the weakness of the existing mechanisms which coordinate economic development on the international level led to the emergence of a multidimensional global crisis: energy, food and financial one.

According to the head of Belarusian mission at U.N.O., counteraction to this crisis is impossible without a radical reform of the existing system of international financial institutions which often prioritize the principles of free market over the sustainable development of every single country as a condition for the sustainable development of the world economy.
