52% of Moldovans are for the accession to the EU, 48% want to be in the Customs Union

The majority of the population supports the accession of the republic to the European Union. News agency BELTA reports that this fact was revealed in a new social research undertaken by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers of Moldova and then published in Kishinev.<br />

Vice chairman of the Association Nikolai Bodyan said, “According to the results of the research, if a referendum on the point of the accession of Moldova to the EU was organized, 52% of the population would support this initiative, 29% wouldn’t and 7% wouldn’t take part in the voting process.”

At the same time if such a referendum on the point of the accession of Moldova to the Customs Union was organized, 48% of all citizens would agree with the initiative, 28% would be against it and 6% wouldn’t participate in the referendum. 21% of the respondents couldn’t give an exact answer to this question.

If a referendum on the point of the accession of Moldova to the NATO was organized, more than half of the citizens of the republic would vote against it and 19% would vote for it. About 25% of the respondents don’t see the necessity for Moldova to enter into this military alliance. 5% of the respondents don’t know anything about NATO.

According to the research 74% of the respondents consider the relations between Moldova and EU to be good, between Moldova and Romania – 72%, 69% think that relations with the Ukraine are good, with the USA – 66%, with Russia – 63%.

The research was held in 72 population centers from December 21 to December 30, 2012. 1194 respondents took part in it. Maximum error is 3%.
