Belarus and Russia to Sign an Agreement on Cooperation in Nuclear Safety

Belarus and Russia are planning to sign an agreement on cooperation in the area of nuclear safety. A draft agreement between the Governments of the two countries was approved by the Council of Ministers’ Decree № 1249 of December 29, 2012 as the basis for negotiations.

Belarus has authorized Energy Minister Alexander Ozerets to conduct the negotiations on the draft agreement and sign it.

According to the Nuclear Energy Department of the Belarusian Ministry of Energy, the fundamental purpose of the agreement is to facilitate the cooperation in order to develop the infrastructure of the nuclear safety in Belarus in view of the construction of the first Russia-projected nuclear power plant in the republic as well as to ensure stable and high level of nuclear security.

The agreement provides for various areas of cooperation, including the development of infrastructure for nuclear safety, safety management systems, development and improvement of appropriate legal and regulatory framework to meet the requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency as well as training of specialists in the field of nuclear safety.
