Supercomputer “SKIF” starts its work in Grodno

The opening of the Grodno regional segment of National GRID-net and supercomputer “SKIF-K-1000.1” will take place on December 16, 2009 in Grodno state university named after Yaka Kupala.

The opening of the Grodno regional segment of National GRID-net and supercomputer “SKIF-K-1000.1” will take place on December 16, 2009 in Grodno state university named after Yaka Kupala.

GSU is the co executer of the Union State program “Development and use of hardware-software system of GRID technologies promising highly efficient (supercomputer) computer system of the SKIF Family (SKIF – GRID). The partners of the university in creation of the national GRID-net are "United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus" (UIIP NAS of Belarus), the Belarusian State University and Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics.

The computer centre of the Grodno – GRID is the supercomputer “SKIF-K-1000.1”. This is the first supercomputer in Belarus, set beyond supercomputer center in UIIP NAS of Belarus. In 2010 an analogues computer centre will be created in the Belarusian State University.

At present GRGU is operating test modes. In future the computer will be used for scientific and applied tasks, which require a big volume of calculations.

After the opening ceremony a round work table will be organized. The questions of the usage of supercomputer technologies in science, education, mechanical engineering, building and medicine will be discussed. Executive director of the program of the union state “SKIF-GRID” Anatolii Krishtopic, deputy director of the United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Sergey Medvedev, research manager of the net Grodno-Grid, chancellor of the GRGU Eugenii Rovba, and the representatives of the government bodies, educational and medical institutions, design engineering firms, commercial enterprises.
