It is planned that in 2010 the Union State will launch a number of large-scale research and production programmes which should attract tangible flow of investment into Belarus and Russia’s economies, reported Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Sergey Rakhmanov.

One of them is the project for producing water-treatment systems. This product is unique for the post-Soviet states; only Belarus has the appropriate technology which makes it possible to produce special filtering and absorptive polymer fibers. Negotiations are being held with “Rosnanotekh” relative to this product. So far three stages of examination have been passed. This project should result in construction of a polymer fibers plant in Belarus. The estimated volume of investment amounts to tens of millions of dollars.

Besides that, Belarusian and Russian scientists are planning to set up a joint venture for the development and manufacture of light-emitting diode (LED) equipment. The parties are now very close to signing of an agreement establishing a joint venture. They have already prepared a platform which attracts western partners. Belarusian platform is of great interest in terms of comprehensive implementation of the project thanks to scientific and technical support as well as our production capabilities. One more important factor is the functioning of the Customs Union of Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan which will make it possible to build a broad market for the produce of the joint venture.

Outside the Union State one can single out a large-scale project for innovative biotechnology which is being implemented within the framework of EurAsEC where the cooperation between Belarus and Russia prevails.
