In 2009 Belarusian athletes won 527 medals in championships and World Cups

The official noted the positive trend as compared with the year 2008, when our sportsmen won 401 gold, silver and bronze medals. In 2009 Belarusian athletes won 208 medals in Olympic sports (whereas in 2008 – 149), including 167 gold medals (in 2008 – 107).

Last year the Ministry of Sports provided for the work of 46 national teams in different sports, more than 200 teams in game sports, 492 sports schools and 12 schools of Olympic reserve.

Nikolai Babets also noted that the latest performance of Belarusian Olympic team was the most successful in the history of the sovereign state. “We took the 17^th team place out of 81 participating countries. At the Paralympic Games we won 19 medals and took the 9^th team place,” reminded the Head of the Sports Department.
