Belarus Is Ready for Arrival of Russian Investors

The Minister of Economic Development of Russia recommended Russian business to look closer at falling in price CIS countries’ assets. “At present we are more interested in politically stable countries” among which E.Nabiullina mentioned Belarus (“BelaPAN”, 28.01.2009).

In its turn, Belarus is ready for the arrival of Russian investors. As is reported by N.Zaichenko, Belarusian Minister of Economy, today Belarus offers Russia 44 investment projects. “These are both the projects which are being worked on and those that we just suggest to our potential investor – Russian party,” he specified (“BelaPAN”, 28.01.2009). According to him, the projects concern “not only crediting but also direct investments and capital contributions (“Belorusskie Novosti”, 28.01.2009).

In particular, as is reported by the Minister of Transport and Communications of Belarus V.Sosnovski, Belarus offers the Russian Federation to implement a number of infrastructure projects “having an approximate investment cost RUB 100 billion” (“Interfax-Zapad”, 29.01.2009). As he noted, transport sector has a lot of projects both global and local that can be of interest for both parties. Among them V.Sosnovski named the second transport corridor М 1/ Е 30 with a parallel railway (“Belorusskie Novosti”, 29.01.2009). “We propose Russian party to modernize the railway along this direction in order to increase the speed range from 140 to 160 km/h,” stressed the Minister (“BelaPAN”, 29.01.2009).
