A renovated Russian national exposition “Tragedy. Courage. Liberation” opened at the museum of the concentration camp “Auschwitz-Birkenau” on Sunday, informs RIA “Novosti”.
On January 27th, 1945 Soviet troops entered the camp. Since then, this day has been celebrated as the Day of the Liberation of Auschwitz and the Holocaust Remembrance Day. In 1947 the concentration camp was turned into a museum honoring the victims of fascism. Soviet exposition was arranged in section number 14 since in 1961. After years of renovation, it is again open to the public. The scientific content of the exhibition was provided by the team of the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War.
The exhibition is divided into several zones and covers an area of about 750 square meters. The first section “The Road to Hell” is dedicated to the tragedy of Soviet prisoners of war, whom Nazis used to test lethal gas “Zyklon B”. An important part of the exposition is the materials of the “Liberation” section telling about the liberation of the concentration camp by the Red Army.
The exposition was opened by State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin who is in Poland for a working visit.
