In 2008 Belarusian trolleybuses began to be delivered to St. Petersburg. The city bought 75 units of “Belkommunmash” vehicles and they took a liking of the residents of St. Petersburg immediately. That was reported by the press-service of municipal government.

Today they are developing the project on setting up the plant for assembling such trolleybuses that will go along the Neva’s banks. All the more the significant part of the units is manufactured in the northern capital. The machinery has been chosen on the basis of the new competitive criteria: apart from the conformity with requirements specifications and the cost of machinery the results of test service in the conditions of the city have been taken into account.

It should be pointed pout that Belarusian machinery in outward appearance as well as in its specifications is close to European standards and is delivered into a whole range of European cities. In St. Petersburg the majority of new trolleybuses go along the Nevski Prospect.

It is remarkable that specially for the northern capital Belarusian manufacturers introduced a range of changes into the construction of the vehicles. In particular there was an emphasis on the break system and electrical equipment safety in the conditions of the damp weather of St. Petersburg; moreover the heating system has been improved. Inside the trolleybuses it is warm indeed, point out the residents of St. Petersburg. The warm air is given from above and is spread equally through the whole cabin. In the area of the central door which is used more often by passengers there is an additional fan heater.

Besides new trolleybuses have their own information system that is programmed for a special route.

But the main merit that has been already valued by the passengers is the low floor of the vehicle and the absence of steps. It was Valentina Matvienko, the St. Petersburg Governor, who insisted on the purchasing of the vehicles with low floors.

Such a construction is especially important for the elderly people, disabled and mothers with baby carriages. Besides thanks to the fact that there is no need to clamber up the cabin, the boarding and deboarding take much less time and consequently reduces the time of the trip. Also there is a special cover on the cab floor, which is slip-resistant, both in a dry and wet condition that is of a great importance in the conditions of the St. Petersburg rainy weather.
